“We had a super trip with Vincent and his team. Vincent was there to pick us up at the airport and took us to Chanty Beach for transfer to the Vingila. There we met ABD the skipper and chef, and Victoria who were really lovely. We were often treated to pancakes and fruit for breakfast with two cooked meals (lunch and dinner), all Malagasy cuisine. The food was really well prepared, very tasty with everything from ‘braai’d’ fresh fish, to fresh ceviche of Spanish Mackerel that we caught off the boat, to various smoked and fresh fish pasta/rice dishes as well as other meals of chicken and ‘zebu’ (beef). One evening we had fresh crabs collected from a village in Russian Bay, with crab salad the next day with the left overs. We had never tried crab and that was a real treat!
Early Monday morning our kayak guide, Alex, joined us and we set off for a test paddle around Sakatia Island. We asked to stop at one of the beaches along the way and Alex organized for someone to cut open some coconuts to experience fresh coconut water. Most amazingly, we then happened upon baby turtles hatching and heading to the sea – so amazing!! Bucket list stuff.
From there we sailed across to Russian Bay and then did various days of kayaking onwards. We really enjoyed the kayaking – it’s a much closer and ‘slower’ way of getting past various landmarks so allows you to experience the view/sights for longer. Crossing open seas also feels very adventurous and luckily the wind and swell was never too hectic to get too worried.
In between kayaking session or being on the islands we would then sail or motor to the next mooring destination, very relaxing just being out on the open water puttering along. The boat was quite small but easily fit the 7 of us on it with enough beds and places to sit or chill. At Nosy Iranja we spent the night in one of Olivia’s cabins, quite rustic but a nice change. Also our only shower of the week Apparently they can rig a shower of sorts on the boat but we ended up just pouring fresh water over ourselves after a swim to get the salt off.
The week was very good value for money. All drinks (from water to soft drinks, beer, wine, cocktails, rum!), food (lots of it! And snacks during the day) and any day trips and park entry fees were included (including the hike around Nosy Komba and lunch at Akiba). So its rustic and busy but for an active family / group of people who are not too fussy about accommodation and showering, definitely an amazing experience.“ B.C June 2024
